Around 6 years ago (gasp) I did a bunch of lectures on animation theory. One subject was how textures of movement have evolved over the years, alongside the more obvious progression of design.
I made these videos to illustrate more clearly how contrast in timing was something that has a clear progression from the 30s to the 90s. The timechart below each clip represents relative change in space between drawings - from the ultra linear early animation - to the soft bouncing of Classic era Disney - to the exaggerated Warner Bros style - brought to it’s peak by John K (in my opinion).
Sorry about the quality on these gifs. I’ll post more stuff like this if theres any interest.

In 1946, two legendary artists began collaboration on a short film. More than half a century later, their creation has finally been completed.
This is Destino, an original concept by Walt Disney and Salvador Dalí, which I have posted before, and it is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in my life.
I just followed the link and watched the video, and it’s one of the strangest and most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. If you have a spare six minutes, go watch it.

Here’s Easytoon. It’s free and you can make simple black-and-white gif animations with it. It is actually piss easy to use so I’ll just assume you can figure out most of it by yourself :-D (if you can’t, send me a note and I’ll explain)
I think a good first step into really “getting” animation is to acknowledge that animation is not movement, but an illusion of movement. Here’s Amber’s spinning kick:

Her left foot moves like four meters in a single frame. Note how she never even appears in the marked spot. She doesn’t need to, because she’s faster than your eyes, and your brain will just fill the gaps and believe this bullshit! That’s how you animate fast movement; the less frames you draw, the more speed you’ve got.
(Speedlines can be used to guide the eye if the frames don’t seem connected enough otherwise.)
When Amber lands, however…
… she takes her time getting back up again. This needs a lot more frames than the kick:
Learn to tell the difference between fast and slow movement! Knowing how to handle different speeds is the key to making animation with a natural looking rhythm.
